Shivering, I watch
the gadwalls dabble in the
cold, wind-rippling pond.

A highway overpass—
the city becomes geometry
resisting the fog.
A flock of robins
leads me along the fenceline
to cedar waxwings.
Two greyhounds
pull uphill toward
the dog star.
A loggerhead shrike
perched in the parking lot tree
chirps at arriving cars.
Two white-tailed deer
capture my dogs’ attention—
giant squirrels.
A wren’s whistling song fills the space between the oaks just before sunrise.
A wary roadrunner
pauses to watch the hikers
walk on down the trail.
I’m wearing brown shoes; otherwise, today’s walk is just like yesterday’s.
A pair of vultures spirals, loops beyond the powerlines.
Safe on the fence,
the possum watches the dogs
practice high jumps.
On cold nights
my gentle greyhounds
walk like wolves.
Birdfeeder sways back and forth. In the shadows, a possum’s eyes reflect moonlight.
A starling sine wave
undulates across grey sky.
A cold front sneaks in.
